The Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, who is in Geneva to attend the high-level session of the Conference on Disarmament and the UN Human Rights Council, met with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, on Monday. During the meeting, Araghchi highlighted the high position of human rights and human dignity in the governance system of the Islamic Republic of Iran and in the country's constitution. He emphasized that the Islamic Republic of Iran spares no effort in this regard. The Iranian foreign minister also highlighted the interactions between Iran and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and declared Iran's readiness to continue these interactions. Araghchi criticized the double standards and selective behavior of certain Western parties on human rights issues. He condemned the inaction and complicity of the US and some other Western countries regarding the systematic and severe violations of human rights and humanitarian law in the Occupied Palestinian Territories as a source of shame for the international community. He stated that such double standards have rendered the human rights rhetoric of these countries utterly invalid and further emboldened the Zionist regime to commit severe international crimes. Citing his report at the beginning of the high-level session of the Human Rights Council, the High Commissioner for Human Rights expressed concern over certain global trends threatening the foundations and standards of human rights. He stressed the need for all governments to adhere to their international legal obligations concerning human rights. Turk also expressed deep concern about the ongoing developments in the occupied Palestinian territories. The high commissioner categorically rejected plans for the forced displacement of the people of Gaza and emphasized that the human rights violations against the Palestinian people have been a standing agenda item of the Human Rights Council. He reaffirmed that the OHCHR clearly condemns the violations of Palestinian people’s rights and has been steadfast in this regard.
